Alessandro Fedrigo

Biography

Electric bassist, composer and improviser Alessandro Fedrigo has developed a personal approach to the fretless bass, placing its sound and expressive possibilities at the heart of his work. His music spans jazz, free improvisation, electronics and experimentation. His solo projects, in which the bass interacts with electronics and sound processing, reveal the more visionary side of his work; with XYQuartet, he has developed an original approach to composition and improvisation, exploring the boundaries between written music, interplay and freedom of form.

Active since the early 1990s, he has performed at Italian festivals and toured Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan and Ecuador. He has recorded around forty albums and collaborated with Amir ElSaffar, Samuel Blaser, Alexander Hawkins, Ben Monder, Robert Wyatt, Elliot Zigmund, Ferenc Nemeth, Claudio Fasoli, Rita Marcotulli, Mauro Negri and Achille Succi, among others. For many years he has ranked among the top ten Italian bassists in the JAZZIT Award.

He co-leads XYQuartet with Nicola Fazzini. Active for over fifteen years, the group has released six albums and toured Italy and abroad. Musica Jazz magazine ranked it the second-best Italian jazz group in both 2014 and 2017.

A jazz graduate with top honours from the Vicenza Conservatory, he combines his artistic practice with cultural project development. Since 2011 he has been president and founder of nusica.org, an association and record label, and artistic director of Sile Jazz, Montello è Jazz and Letture Improvvise.

In 2020, the University of Padua appointed him artistic director of “Pansodia”, a multimedia work involving over 200 artists in a 24-hour stream for International Jazz Day. That same year, he received an award for artistic direction from the Italian Jazz Federation. From 2021 to 2023 he was president of MIDJ, the Italian Association of Jazz Musicians.
